Renovations: Going from houses to homes

Home renovations are on rise and the trend is only expected to grow. People are preferring to remodel rather than moving, believing in upgrading and expanding. More and more families are adapting their homes to accommodate aging members of the family.

“According to Angie’s List, in 2015 homeowners will spend even more than they did this year on renovations, with 51 per cent planning to shell out $1,000 to $5,000 more and 23 per cent earmarking $5,000 to $10,000 more.”

Interior décor: A beautiful blend of modern and traditional style

•  The sophisticated, mid-century minimalistic modern design is back with a bang but with relaxed undertones. One of the most interesting comeback from the 1980s golden era is that of warmer metal colours like going crazy with various shades of gold. Its reassuring golden glow is going to be evident on furniture, lamps and other accessories. “In 2015, homeowners will no longer be limited to silver or stainless steel fixtures, and will feel free to mix and max finish colors, or go bold with all gold,” according to the Zillow Digs report.
•  The clean, clear lines will be trendy but to be paired with contrast styles such as interesting rococo mirror or the decorated walls.
•  Decorated walls: Wallpapers are making a stylish comeback with many colours and textures to spice the game. Besides wallpapers, a lots of design and art is going to show up on the walls in the form of decals, appliques, poems, inspiring quotations and even power packed phrases.
Upcycling or recycling is predicted to be a major source of inspiration to give your house a more personalized touch while adding that oomph factor to your furniture.

Interior Colours: Marsala again? Or the shift to hues of blues?

The famed Pantone Color Institute may have picked Marsala – reddish-brown hue – to be the colour of the year for 2015. But cool blue is also gaining clear mandate and high acceptance as the most popular accent color for interior decorating. What’s more the deep natural hues of blue complement the earthy tones of Marsala, making them work together beautifully. Pantone’s top cool color predictions also include dreamy Aquamarine, a vibrant Scuba Blue, a minty Lucite Green and Classic Blue.

Kitchen design trends

Kitchens no longer play the role of a functional area, fast becoming the hub of the homes where families group together and connect (no wonder living rooms are disappearing off the scene).

•  Clear mandate on open-plan, Euro style kitchens with fewer wall cabinets. Open shelves enhances the spaciousness, personalize the space and make it feel lived-in.
•  Shift to furniture styles classy cabinetry rather than ceiling high closed shelves.
•  Two-tone cabinetry with exciting contrasts is going to rule the roost. Strikingly vibrant shades such as deep red, dusty mustard, royal blue and coral pinks are going to infuse some life into the kitchen.
•  Metallic cabinets blending with raw wood for that timeless, classic yet sleek look. Warmer, softer shades of metal such as gold, copper and bronze will shine and find a place in kitchen cabinets, overheads, faucets and even doors.
•  More textured material such as granite, quartz and natural marble will be used in raw finish.

Bathroom design trends

Bathrooms will continue to reflect luxurious aura, especially with freestanding bathtubs and sinks with legs rather than cabinets underneath. As with everything else in house design aspects, the shift would be towards clean, contemporary lines with minimalistic approach.

So are you ready to blend these interesting trends into your renovation or decoration strategy? When we say house trends, it doesn’t necessarily mean simply play along with the rest of the world even when your heart sings a different tune. It just means being aware of what new design elements have emerged and how it works with your taste, budget and requirements. And perhaps incorporating a little bit of the new with what you already have – for gaining that special look! After all, every house has a personality and invariably that personality is yours!
